Though this is a little late, on Monday May 19 the latest trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy was released. And again, I was pleasantly entertained by the blend of humor and action. More importantly, I was also thoroughly happy with the fact that little was spoiled via plot or action set pieces, which is quite surprising. The fact that this is the biggest gamble for Marvel since the original Thor and the marketing team did not over saturate the trailer is ‘mind-boggling.’
Now with all the action and humor, the coolest part of the new trailer is that the public finally hears Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel as Groot. And while Cooper’s voice acting was not how I pictured Rocket sounding (even though I am not a fan of the comic book), the limited screentime of the mammal results in my inability to form a negative opinion. On the other hand, Vin Diesel’s Groot caused me to reminisce about one of the greatest/most underrated children movies of all time, The Iron Giant; many do not know that Vin Diesel was the voice of the title character, which is perfectly copied for the tall tree character.
Needless to say, this trailer fired on all cylinders; my ticket was sold from the first teaser, but the newest preview raised my anticipation for Guardians of the Galaxy. The misfits of the Marvel cinematic universe look to be the perfect ragtag counterpoint to the ‘alpha-dog’ Avengers. It looks like director James Gunn, who has made a name for himself with mature independent films, has knocked it out of the park and in the process raised his stock. I cannot wait until August 1.
